Our regular tea ceremonies continue on Wednesday, August 3rd at 4 PM with the Gong Fu Tea ceremony. Perhaps the most exquisite and beautiful of the various tea ceremonies, the Gong Fu ceremony is a treat to all of the senses. You’ll get to experience oolong tea brewed in an yixing tea pot and learn what makes yixing clay so special. The cost for the ceremony is $15 per person plus tax. Space is limited. Reservations can be made at the teahouse or by calling 303-777-CUPS (2877).
Yvonne Russell, a regular customer and mahjongg queen, recently went on her second tea tour with Zhuping Hodge, our tea master in Tucson. Yvonne will once again share stories, photos, and more about her experience in China and what she learned about tea culture. Grab a pot of tea and she just may tell a story about where that tea came from!
The talk is on Wednesday, July 20th at 7 PM and is free as always!
Some photos from the recent speaker series with Chris Brignola on the guzheng and Adam Muniz on the drums. It was a very enjoyable evening!
Christmas seems to come in spring and early summer when it comes to tea. Opening the first packages of freshly picked tea is as much fun as opening presents on Christmas morning. And the buttery smell of young green tea is quite a delight. Recently we have received more 2011 teas, including Silver Needle white. They are all exquisite, but I am particularly enjoying this year’s Purple Bamboo. Come on down and give yourself an early Christmas present by stocking up on this year’s crop. Also, with the arrival of these teas, the 2010 versions are now 25% off, so it’s a great chance to try some of the higher end teas at a cheaper price.
The Guzheng, or Chinese zither, is perhaps the most well-known Chinese instrument. When you hear a traditional Chinese song, it’s most likely the Guzheng. With its 21 strings it can create quite a variety of sounds and melodies. Seven Cups is proud to host a local Guzheng player at the teahouse for your musical pleasure. On Wednesday, June 15th, at 7 PM, Chris Brignola will introduce the Guzheng and, with fellow percussionist Allan Muniz, will perform a number of original songs on the ancient instrument. This is a free event, but we will be passing around the proverbial hat for the musicians.
Chris Brignola a Senior at CU-Denver meet Allan Muniz on 16th mall shortly after Allan had moved from Costa Rica to Denver in the summer of 2010. Chris Brignola was street performing on 16th mall one afternoon, playing the Guzheng when Allan stopped to ask what the instrument was called. Within a couple of weeks the two were back on 16th mall perfuming together, Chris on the Guzheng and Allan playing percussion. Over the course of the next year Chris and Allan have recorded a number of songs, gathered more musicians and formed a full band, Beta Wave. Now the two are booking shows in Denver, working on a full length and exploring as many Eastern and eclectic instrumentation as possible. Street performing still remains a focal point of the band and can be seen on the weekends playing on 16th street whenever possible.
Our next regular tea ceremony is the Gong Fu tea ceremony on Wednesday June 8th at 4:00 PM. Using Yixing tea ware, sniff and drink cups, and oolong tea, this ceremony has it all. It’s a great opportunity to deepen your knowledge and appreciation of tea, as well as get all of your questions answered. Call now to reserve your seat, as space is limited.
We are very much looking forward to our newest offering. On Saturday June 25, from noon to 1:30, we are joining with the Truffle Cheese Shop for a cheese and tea tasting. Rob and his crew at the Truffle Cheese Shop are as passionate about cheeses as we are about teas. We thought we would combine forces and see what happens. We will be tasting five teas with five cheeses, mixing and matching different pairings.
The cost for this class is $30 per person and it is limited to 24 tasters. You must reserve your space by calling the teahouse at 303-777-CUPS (2877). This class will fill up, so call soon. If you have any questions, just let us know.
We are having regular tea ceremonies at the teahouse every other Wednesday afternoon at 4 PM. Our next is on May 25th, and it is the puer tea ceremony. In this ceremony we taste both green and black puer. What makes this one especially interesting is that we cook the black puer in an yixing stove, making for a richer, smoother taste. If you think you know black puer, this will most likely be something new for you. You must make reservations at the teahouse by stopping in or calling. Seating is limited so reserve your space soon.
We are happy to report that we have received the first batch of 2011 teas. Usually it’s June before we get the 2011 teas, but apparent the tea farmers in Sichuan were extra speedy this year! We have three teas from the Meng Ding area: Green Bamboo, Sweet Dew, and Yellow Buds. Sweet Dew is a green that I started really enjoying last year, and this year’s crop is continuing my newfound appreciation. Come and try these exquisit teas!
We’ll let you know when more 2011 teas arrive.
Ever wonder what the differences between white and black teas are? Now you can find out in a new class we are offering. In All The Tea In China, teahouse owner Greg Fellman will cover the six major varieties of tea, talking about how various cultivars and processing methods lead to the different types of tea. And what’s a tea class without some tasting? We will sample every category of tea so you can taste the difference as well. The class is on Saturday May 14thfrom 10 a.m. to noon. The cost is $30, plus tax, and you can sign up at the teahouse. Look for announcements about more classes in the months ahead.
