September Speaker Series: Cultural Miscommunication
On Wednesday, September 15th at 7 PM Seven Cups has the pleasure of welcoming Sharon and Michael Black. Mike and Sharon have both spent over a decade living in foreign cultures. Living in a foreign land can be hard; social gaffes come easy. They will share stories of culture shock, learning languages and making some pretty funny mistakes. As a part of the process, you will learn some basic Chinese pronunciation and vocabulary. You will also learn what you definitely don’t want to say when teaching a bunch of 8th graders or having tea with your future wife and her mother, her aunt, and two sisters. This should be a fun talk, so come early, get a good cup of tea, and enjoy their stories.
Mike and Sharon Black met in 1999 when he moved to Taiwan. At that time she taught in Providence University’s Chinese Language program. He took a class and was impressed with her ability to gently push her students to master the language. After the class ended, he invited her to have coffee. A few years later they were married. They had a daughter in 2005, moved back to Colorado in 2007 and started the Colorado Chinese Language Center in 2009.
